Oatmeal cookies just have something special about them. Not only are they delicious.. but I think what makes them so special is that they are socially acceptable to eat anytime of day! Right? Because there is oatmeal in it… I can have it for breakfast too? Well I like to believe so 🙂
So this recipe is especially exciting for me, because it is my first time using maple sugar!!
I use maple syrup for plenty of my favorite recipes, but now that I have found maple sugar – total game changer. You might be wondering; how is it different from maple syrup, and if it’s called maple s-u-g-a-r is it bad for you?
Well I will answer these questions as best as I can.
So the only difference between maple syrup (which is made by boiling down sap from maple trees) is that maple sugar is made when the sap from the sugar maple trees is boiled for a longer period of time than it takes to make regular maple syrup. When nearly all of the water has been boiled away, the remnants left are a solid sugar, maple sugar.
To answer the question on if it is healthy, maple syrup and sugar is completely natural and organic and has been around for ages. All they are doing to the natural sap is boiling it down enough to create a solid. It is important to keep in mind that although it is a natural healthy sugar, it is also sugar. So just be smart and don’t eat copious amounts!
I highly recommend buying your maple syrup and maple sugar from a local farmer in your area. This way you know you are getting the real 100% maple syrup. When buying maple syrup from a store, make sure to read labels carefully. This way, you get real maple syrup — not just maple-flavored syrup, which can be loaded with refined sugar or high-fructose corn syrup.
So these are some of my favorite cookies, and are a great treat for Christmas time!
You can make so many cookies with such little flour (barely over a cup of flour makes 15 cookies!), so if you are making cookies for family and friends during the holidays, consider making these.
